The Harmonious Nature of Trines and Sextiles
From a previous session about squares and oppositions in the natal chart, we learned how two planets can seem to have their own agenda and want things done their own way. This often creates tension within the chart and can result in the person feeling as if they have two conflicting needs within their own character.
In contrast, this month we’ll have a look at the aspects in which planets have an easy relationship with one another, they “cheer each other on” so-to-speak. When two planets are in a trine relationship (separated by 120° or so), they tend to be operating within the same element, establishing already a common ground from which to work. But even if the planets fall in different elements, the 120° aspect is one that brings a sense of comfort and ease between the two planets involved. Trines often reveal gifts within our personality that we might not even know we have.

The sextile aspect – where two planets are separated by approximately 60° – results in having the planets able to work with one another harmoniously, yet sometimes needing a little push or effort from the person. Planets in sextile often produce great results and are said to be full of positive opportunity. But if we don’t apply the bit of effort needed, those opportunities can slip away unnoticed.
Frequently labelled the “soft” aspects in the chart, trines and sextiles often describe the gifts and talents in a person’s character.
Bring your chart. Let’s track down any trines and sextiles in your chart, and find the ones that are closest to being exact. (Hint: scanning the aspect grid makes this easy.) Let’s explore how you have already tapped into the talents and gifts that these aspects offer you. Or maybe you’ll discover you have taken some of them for granted.
