In many natal charts, we can find two planets that each seem to have a different agenda. One part of the personality wants to do things one way, and anther part wants things done a very different way. The resulting tension frequently pulls our attention, and sometimes we are left believing that we have a flaw in our character.

Oppositions – planets that are 180° apart in the chart – tend to create a back-and-forth style of dilemma. At times, we cater to one planet’s needs, but as a result, the other planet, the neglected one, demands our attention. It can be an ongoing challenge to have the two sides either take turns or come to some compromise.

Two planets that are square one another (90° apart) reveal parts of our personality that are at cross purposes with one another. Often one planet may provoke the other. We can experience this as one part of our personality operating in a way that makes another part very uncomfortable. We feel tripped-up in life when we experience this inner imbalance. We carry on, hoping other people don’t notice that we mess ourselves up.

Frequently labelled the “hard” aspects in the chart, squares and oppositions often describe the key challenges in a person’s story.

Bring your chart. Let’s track down any oppositions and squares, and find the ones that are closest to being exact. (Hint: scanning the aspect grid makes this easy.) Let’s see if we can articulate these inner turmoils, and try to find ways of honouring and soothing these contrasting facets of our personality.

House Rulerships

When a planet is placed in a house, we find that the functions of that planet will be noticed especially in the topics or people that are associated with that house. For a general sense of how the person might approach matters of the house, we can ponder the traits of the sign on the cusp of the house.

But there is a treasure of information that is often overlooked. A planet that rules the sign on the cusp of a house becomes the ruler of that house. The ruler of a house – or more importantly – the condition of it, gives us deeper layers of meaning that are projected back onto the affairs of the house it rules.

This technique is especially useful when assessing empty houses, giving us meaning where we thought there was none.

Vocation and Career

Following last month’s look at the MC-IC axis, this month we will see what the chart has to say about a person’s vocation and career.

The word “vocation” comes from the Latin word “vocare” – to call or to summon. We could say, then, that a person’s vocation is their calling – something they feel pulled to do. For some, the vocation is the career, or certainly, it shows up in the career. For others, a vocation may be something they do on their own time; these people have a career to support themselves, allowing them to pursue their vocation freely.

Bring your chart. Let’s explore what it has to say about where you are called, and what career paths might be suitable.
